My Journey

My journey began at the age of 14 in my hometown of Detroit, Michigan.  As a teenager, I was unaware of the negative effects from my unhealthy eating habits. At that time, I did not like many foods and ate mostly junk food. This all changed when I was 20 years old and doubled over in pain after eating a slab of pork ribs. Shortly afterwards, my ex-husband and I were on our way to Palm Springs, California for a work/vacation when we were sitting by a swimming pool with his boss who offered me some raw nuts, seeds and dates. This introduction to a different type of food completely altered my life.

I returned to Michigan and joined a natural foods co-op where I volunteered a few hours each week for discounts on food. There were mom-and-pop health food stores popping up everywhere, and people loved sharing their recipes for homemade yogurt, granola, banana bread and Shepherd’s pie. I started to take natural food classes and finally liked healthy foods.

When I was growing up, my mom tried her best with balanced meals (including veggies), but I thought they were boring and lacked taste. Fortunately, my mom was conscious of sugar and we could only have water at mealtime. We mostly had home-cooked meals and going out to eat was a big treat for us. However, at restaurants, the veggies were mostly frozen or canned, and like many moms during this era, they were unaware of using fresh herbs, spices and other ways to make food, all of which can be a game changer.

I struggled through the years in trying to figure this food thing out. Diets never worked for me. I tried extended water fasting, juice fasting, colon cleanses, and many other diets. I also went to natural doctors, took supplements and tried different types of therapies. Despite these efforts I still struggled with food and wellness.

While I was doing yoga consistently (e.g., two to three times each week) and working out regularly, my food and exercise were still not in balance. It was not until I moved to Los Angeles and stepped up my yoga regime that my life really changed. In order to have a strong yoga session, you need to eat well. And in order to feel optimal, you need to do yoga consistently. By eating well and practicing yoga, I sustained a higher level of life and felt better both mentally and physically.

I got very good at knowing the cues of my ups and downs that food would play on my body and mind. I started living my best life knowing that food is my medicine and that eating is “a way of life” NOT a diet. I have had so many experiences, both good and bad, and thankfully I am still learning!

I have been a vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, raw-plant foodist, and my current balanced state. I listen to my body and feed myself well with organic and natural fresh foods. I love my way of eating and never feel denied of anything. I also never have to count calories. I am tuned in to my body, mind and spirit, and am grateful for the turbulent years that have taught me to be whole. I hope that I can help you with what I have learned over the course of five decades. Eating should taste good, look appealing and have you operating at a high octane level.

My way applies a holistic approach to your well-being, recognizing that how you sleep, move, breathe and think are equally as important as what you eat. I will provide you support and tools that enable you to gain a greater sense of control over your mind and body. You cannot change the past, but you can start now and change the future.

You are not alone. I am here to help you. Love yourself enough to live a healthy life!

Namaste,
